Maarjamaa College of Education is a basic school managed by the Ministry of Education and Research for children with mental disorders and behavioral problems. The school admits students who need to apply the service of a closed child care institution. Pupils, usually from the age of 12 to the age of 17, are referred to the school on the basis of a court decision or order. Teaching is based on the basic school national curriculum and the basic school simplified state curriculum in both Estonian and Russian. Since 2014, the school has been organizing teaching in hospitals in the South Estonian region (Viljandi, Tartu).
School has 2 study places: Emajõe study center (Kastre parish, Tartumaa) and Valgejõe study center (Tapa parish, Lääne-Virumaa).
